The Hunter McGuire Lower School of Stuart Hall awards financial aid based on two criteria:
a. Financial needs of the candidate’s family
b. Candidate’s potential for excellence both as a student and as a member of the Stuart Hall Community.
Financial aid is based on an annual assessment of the family’s financial situation. To apply, parents must supply the School with a copy of their Federal Tax Form 1040 along with accompanying schedules and file a Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) with the School and Student Service for Financial Aid.
The Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) is an application with the School and Student Service (SSS) for Financial Aid, a service of the National Association of Independent Schools and administered by the Educational Testing Service. A fee of $24.00 is charged for the service. Forms are available in the Admissions Office although online application is preferable (www.nais.org).
The PFS is a detailed form used to determine the amount each family can afford for a child’s education. SSS processes the form and then sends a report to Hunter McGuire with a figure representing SSS’s estimation of a family’s ability to pay tuition costs. This amount is subject to closer scrutiny and interpretation by Stuart Hall’s Financial Aid Committee. While the SSS figure is not absolute, it is useful as a uniform, outside assessment of each family’s financial status. In cases where the parents are separated or divorced, the custodial parent should file the PFS and the non-custodial parent should file the Financial Statement for Parents Who Are Separated or Divorced. Stuart Hall will consider the assets of both parents before making an award.
Financial aid should be requested as soon as possible. Applications submitted promptly receive maximum consideration. Families are expected to file new forms each year and applications that are submitted promptly receive maximum consideration. The suggested guidelines for financial aid application are as follows:
January 25 PFS completed and submitted to SSS (school code #4044)
February 15 Copy of IRS Federal Tax Form 1040 and schedules submitted to the Admissions Office.
March 15 First-round allocations made
Your financial aid application will not affect the admissions process in any way; however, assessment of a student’s potential contribution to the school community may be involved in determining the level of financial aid awards. All financial aid information is handled in a strictly confidential manner.
