Family-Style Lunch

A tradition that is special to parents, children, and faculty alike is our family-style lunch. As parents, you can appreciate the importance of sharing a meal together. Lunchtime at Hunter McGuire both creates and reflects the heart of our school’s culture. Here’s how it works:
- We eat at round tables seating 6-8.
- At least one adult eats at each table.
- Serving dishes are placed in the center of each table. *
- No one sits until we all sing a blessing together.
- After everyone is seated, adults serve the children.
- No one eats until all have been served and napkins are on laps.
- Children may request a serving or a taste of an item. If they believe they won’t like what’s being served, they may request a taste, then get a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (from a central table) after they’ve tasted the selection.
- Adults monitor table conversation and manners.
- At the kindergarten tables, fifth graders help by serving food, opening milk cartons, leading conversation and clearing tables.
- Helpers from each table are assigned to clear tables.
- All children help clean up, sweep the floor and stack chairs.
Knowing that your child is eating a well-balanced, family-style lunch each day and that a caring adult is paying attention to his or her meal-time manners and respect for others can relieve your mind. You can’t be with your child 24/7. At Hunter McGuire, we understand this. Our family-style lunch is just one way we can help.
*Salads and vegetarian alternatives are offered for students on dietary restrictions.
