Beyond the Books
The co-curricular and enrichment programs at Hunter McGuire will enhance and extend your child’s educational experience. Our programs not only integrate art, music, Spanish, physical education, and media and technology into the core curriculum, but also provide creative outlets for students in athletics and after-school activities. We even have a Chess Club. Through these programs, our students deepen their exploration of core curriculum concepts, learn to think independently, and are empowered to express themselves creatively.
Art
Your child’s masterpieces—many of them created in the style of the great artists of history—will bring the halls to life at Hunter McGuire. Our art program, which teaches the principles of design, the work of the masters, the elements of art appreciation, and the power of personal expression, is one of the hallmarks of our school. Twice each week, students visit our well-stocked art room and joyfully express themselves. Our annual art show and other community exhibits provide an opportunity to showcase all students’ work. Through an exciting partnership with James Madison University, our students participate in the “Art Around the World” program, providing them with a unique opportunity to connect through art with children around the world. At Hunter McGuire, you’ll be amazed by all that your child can create!
Music
Would you believe that your child can learn to read and compose music and play several musical instruments in elementary school? Our music program, which uses the Kodaly method of reading and composing music, encourages exploration of and appreciation for the world of music. In a carefully sequenced program, students learn to sing tunefully and to play the xylophone and recorder. A school chorus—open to all third, fourth and fifth graders—performs at school assemblies and in the community. In addition, the entire school community comes together twice each year for a musical performance by all students. The sound of music is a part of every day at Hunter McGuire.
Spanish
Hola! Como esta usted? Hello, how are you? Beginning in kindergarten, your child will develop an enthusiasm for learning language and an appreciation for other cultures through exposure to Spanish. Our program integrates stories, songs, and games to teach basic vocabulary and expressions, to build an understanding of the Spanish culture, and to create global awareness. Your child will graduate from Hunter McGuire with the foundation to advance quickly in Spanish in middle school and high school.
Media and Technology
Our state-of-the-art 24-station interactive computer lab and our library/media center work together to provide the tools for a multi-media approach to learning. Classroom content supplies the framework for carefully sequenced instruction in technology and research techniques. For example:
- Second graders develop a database of books they’ve read over the course of the year.
- Third graders studying ancient Greece and Rome research their topics using both the Internet and the media center and then develop PowerPoint presentations to share with the entire school community at a bi-weekly assembly.
- Fifth graders studying economics track stock performance using spreadsheet technology. Fifth graders also study Web design and develop their own Web sites.
Before you know it, you’ll be going to your child for advice on how to use today’s technology to find the information you need!
Physical Education
Four times a week, your child will participate in fun, structured physical education classes that promote cooperation, good sportsmanship, and respect for others’ abilities. Track, tennis, gymnastics, lacrosse, basketball, and soccer are just some of the sports explored. At Hunter McGuire, your child’s love of play and a healthy attitude toward competition will flourish.
Athletics
On the field or on the court, the athletic program at Hunter McGuire is outstanding! Each year, more than 70 percent of Hunter McGuire students suit up for our after-school athletic programs, which emphasize sportsmanship, team-play, and the development of fundamental skills. Your child can join our co-ed K-2 or 3-5 teams and participate in soccer each fall and basketball each winter. Weekly practices and games are played in a cooperative and supportive environment where every player is valued and appreciated. Parent volunteers coach, manage, and referee these teams, exemplifying the winning combination of our parent-school partnership that is so essential to the HMS culture. So put on your athletic shoes and remember: If you’re having fun, then you’ve won, Go Dragons!
Chess Club
From January until April each year, the Chess Club meets for an hour and a half on Friday afternoons after school. Beginning in third grade, students learn the rules and moves of the game and challenge each other to short matches. At the end of the season, all players participate in a tournament and winners are honored at each grade level. Every participant is recognized for his or her efforts and enthusiasm.
After-School Enrichment Program
Running from 3-5 p.m. each day, the after-school enrichment program at Hunter McGuire offers a homework period, interactive games, music, art, writing activities, and outside playtime. If you are a working parent, this program provides convenience for you and constructive after-school activities for your child.
